AT Hardware -Device Adapter (w/Base) for Positioning Arms:
It is very firm for the user, infinitely pensionable, but can be removed instantly and attached to something else. Mounting
System that allows positioning of a device in virtually any position. Attaches to a table or wheelchair using clamp and the two device bases can accommodate a switch (small round platform) or a device (large platform- compressed keyboard, Expert Trackball or Joystick Mouse).
This is excellent for students who have fine motor skills and struggle grasping items. This tool attaches to anything like keyboards, bigkeys, intellikeys, ACC devices, alphasmpar, or big buttons.
( RJCooper $119)
Description:The BIGtrack has a 3-inch trackball, which makes it the largest trackball available. The large ball requires less fine motor control than a standard trackball and it is ruggedly built. It has a left and a right mouse click button located behind the trackball to avoid unwanted mouse clicks.
Description: BigKeys LX Keyboard is the size of a standard keyboard with 1” square keys, 4 times larger than a standard key. An easily accessible switch allows a teacher to choose the keyboard layout that best fits the students’ needs.
Cost: $159.00 (However, discounts are granted upon all educational purposes)
Characteristics: Students who would greatly benefit from this tool are those who have poor fine motor skills and are unable to properly hold a pencil in order to write. Additionally, this tool could be very beneficial for those students who lack the ability to use the motor function in both of their hands. Therefore, to accommodate one-handed operation, there is a key called “Assist Mode”. In Assist Mode, function keys can be produced by successively pressing F and the numeric key (rather than simultaneously pressing the 2 keys.) In addition to this, students who have poor visual perception may benefit from the size of the large keys, in that, they could see them better.
Environment: Students could use this tool at school in either the computer lab, or the classroom computer. Also, this keyboard could be hooked up to a school-owned laptop that a child could use at their desk, while others are writing. I do not believe that this is as likely to be used at home as it is quite pricey and not all families have the money to put out for a keyboard.
Tasks: These keyboards could greatly improve a child’s motivation to do well as they have all of the resources to communicate and to do their school work. In addition to this, children who have trouble writing can complete their writing tasks with the keyboard. Also, if a student has a visual perception and is asked to type a few sentences on a computer in the classroom or the lab; the large keys could help to assist them.
